Temporal Subordinate Clauses

Connect events with bevor, nachdem, während, bis, and seitdem.

Temporal Subordinate Clauses

Temporal subordinate clauses show how two events are connected in time.

The most important conjunctions in this lesson are:

  • bevor — before
  • nachdem — after
  • während — while
  • bis — until
  • seitdem — since

All of them introduce a subordinate clause, so the conjugated verb goes to the end.

1. bevor

bevor introduces the event that happens later.

Examples:

  • Ich frühstücke, bevor ich zur Arbeit gehe.
  • Anna schließt das Fenster, bevor sie das Haus verlässt.
  • Bevor wir fahren, kaufen wir die Tickets.

Order of events:

  1. first action in the main clause;
  2. later action in the bevor clause.

2. nachdem

nachdem introduces the event that happens first.

Examples:

  • Nachdem wir gegessen hatten, gingen wir spazieren.
  • Anna rief Paul an, nachdem sie nach Hause gekommen war.
  • Nachdem der Kurs beendet war, fuhren alle nach Hause.

Order of events:

  1. action in the nachdem clause;
  2. later action in the main clause.

In past narration, the earlier action often uses Plusquamperfekt:

  • Nachdem wir gegessen hatten, gingen wir spazieren.

3. während

während means while.

It shows that two actions happen at the same time.

Examples:

  • Anna kocht, während Paul den Tisch deckt.
  • Während ich arbeite, hört mein Sohn Musik.
  • Paul las ein Buch, während er auf den Zug wartete.

4. bis

bis means until.

It marks the endpoint of an action or situation.

Examples:

  • Ich warte, bis du fertig bist.
  • Bleib hier, bis der Bus kommt.
  • Wir arbeiteten, bis es dunkel wurde.

The main action continues up to the event in the bis clause.

5. seitdem

seitdem means since.

It connects a starting point in the past with a later or continuing situation.

Examples:

  • Seitdem ich in München wohne, fahre ich oft mit der U-Bahn.
  • Ich spreche mehr Deutsch, seitdem ich den Kurs besuche.
  • Seitdem Anna den neuen Job hat, ist sie sehr beschäftigt.

When the situation continues into the present, German usually uses the present tense.

6. Word order

After all temporal conjunctions, the conjugated verb goes to the end.

Examples:

  • bevor ich zur Arbeit gehe
  • nachdem wir gegessen hatten
  • während Paul den Tisch deckt
  • bis der Bus kommt
  • seitdem ich hier wohne

Incorrect:

  • ❌ bevor ich gehe zur Arbeit
  • ✅ bevor ich zur Arbeit gehe

7. Clause order

Main clause first

  • Ich frühstücke, bevor ich zur Arbeit gehe.
  • Ich warte, bis du fertig bist.

Subordinate clause first

  • Bevor ich zur Arbeit gehe, frühstücke ich.
  • Bis du fertig bist, warte ich.

When the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause begins with the conjugated verb.

8. Comma

A comma is required between the clauses.

Examples:

  • Ich rufe dich an, nachdem ich angekommen bin.
  • Während ich arbeite, ist mein Handy aus.
  • Seitdem ich hier wohne, lerne ich Deutsch.

9. Quick comparison

10. Common mistakes

Mistake 1: Confusing bevor and nachdem

  • bevor = before
  • nachdem = after

Mistake 2: Wrong verb position

  • ❌ nachdem wir hatten gegessen
  • ✅ nachdem wir gegessen hatten

Mistake 3: Wrong main-clause order

  • ❌ Nachdem wir gegessen hatten, wir gingen spazieren.
  • ✅ Nachdem wir gegessen hatten, gingen wir spazieren.

Mistake 4: Forgetting the comma

  • ❌ Ich warte bis du fertig bist.
  • ✅ Ich warte, bis du fertig bist.

Mistake 5: Wrong tense with seitdem

For a situation that still continues:

  • ✅ Seitdem ich hier wohne, lerne ich Deutsch.
