Personal Pronouns: Nominative
Replace nouns with ich, du, er, sie, es, wir, ihr, sie, and Sie.
Personal Pronouns in the Nominative
Personal pronouns (die Personalpronomen) replace nouns and names so that they do not have to be repeated in speech.
Maria wohnt in München. Sie lernt Deutsch.
The pronoun sie replaces the name Maria.
In this lesson, we look at personal pronouns in the Nominative. They usually function as the subject of the sentence.
Personal pronouns
| Person | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| 1st person | ich — I | wir — we |
| 2nd person, informal | du — you | ihr — you |
| 3rd person | er — he / sie — she / es — it | sie — they |
| Polite form | Sie — you | Sie — you |
Examples:
- Ich lerne Deutsch.
- Du wohnst in Berlin.
- Er arbeitet heute.
- Wir lernen zusammen.
- Ihr wohnt in München.
- Sie kommen aus Deutschland.
er, sie or es
In the 3rd person singular, the pronoun depends on the grammatical gender of the noun:
| Article | Pronoun | Example |
|---|---|---|
| der | er | der Tisch → er |
| die | sie | die Lampe → sie |
| das | es | das Buch → es |
| die, plural | sie | die Bücher → sie |
For example:
- Der Mann arbeitet. Er arbeitet zu Hause.
- Die Frau lernt Deutsch. Sie lernt jeden Tag.
- Das Kind spielt. Es ist im Garten.
- Die Kinder spielen. Sie sind im Garten.
The pronoun is chosen according to the grammatical gender of the German noun.
For example:
Das Mädchen lernt Deutsch. Es wohnt in Berlin.
Because Mädchen is neuter (das Mädchen), the pronoun es is used.
du, ihr and Sie
German uses different pronouns when addressing other people:
- du — informal, for one person;
- ihr — informal, for several people;
- Sie — polite, for one or several people.
Examples:
- Paul, du wohnst in Berlin.
- Paul und Anna, ihr wohnt in Berlin.
- Frau Berger, Sie wohnen in Berlin.
The polite pronoun Sie is always written with a capital letter.
sie and Sie
The form sie can mean:
- sie — she;
- sie — they.
The polite Sie means “you”.
Compare:
- sie lernt — she is learning;
- sie lernen — they are learning;
- Sie lernen — you are learning.
The meaning is determined by the context, the verb form, and capitalization.
Pronoun and verb
The personal pronoun determines the form of the verb:
| Pronoun | lernen |
|---|---|
| ich | lerne |
| du | lernst |
| er / sie / es | lernt |
| wir | lernen |
| ihr | lernt |
| sie / Sie | lernen |
This pattern is already familiar from verb conjugation in the Präsens.
Remember
Personal pronouns in the Nominative:
ich, du, er, sie, es, wir, ihr, sie, Sie
When replacing a noun, pay attention to its gender and number:
der → er
die → sie
das → es
die (Plural) → sie
Also distinguish between the forms of address:
du — one person, informal;
ihr — several people, informal;
Sie — polite form of address.
