Personal pronouns in the Accusative
Personal pronouns can function as direct objects in the Accusative.
Compare:
- Anna sieht den Mann.
- Anna sieht ihn.
The pronoun ihn replaces the direct object den Mann.
Forms of personal pronouns

Replacing the direct object with a pronoun
If the direct object is already clear from the context, it can be replaced by a personal pronoun in the Accusative.
- Ich sehe den Mann. → Ich sehe ihn.
- Ich kenne die Frau. → Ich kenne sie.
- Ich höre das Kind. → Ich höre es.
- Ich treffe die Freunde. → Ich treffe sie.
Personal pronouns can also refer to the participants in a conversation:
- Paul sieht mich.
- Ich besuche dich.
- Der Lehrer fragt uns.
- Ich treffe euch.
- Wir verstehen Sie.

When the direct object is expressed by a personal pronoun, use the corresponding Accusative form:
