Declarative Sentence

Learn the golden rule: the conjugated verb strictly takes position #2.

Declarative Sentence

A declarative sentence (der Aussagesatz) gives information, describes a situation, or states a fact.

The golden rule

In a German main clause, the conjugated verb is always in position 2.

Position 2 means the second sentence element, not necessarily the second word.

1. Subject in position 1

The most common sentence pattern is:

Subject + conjugated verb + other information

Position 1Position 2Other information
IchlerneDeutsch.
Mariawohntin München.
Wirarbeitenheute zu Hause.
Der neue Studentkommtaus Spanien.

Examples:

  • Ich lerne Deutsch.
  • Maria wohnt in München.
  • Wir arbeiten heute zu Hause.
  • Der neue Student kommt aus Spanien.

In the last sentence, Der neue Student contains three words, but it forms one sentence element. Therefore, kommt is still in position 2.

2. Another element in position 1

A sentence can begin with time, place, or another piece of information.

The conjugated verb must still stay in position 2.

Other element + conjugated verb + subject + remaining information

Position 1Position 2SubjectOther information
HeutelerneichDeutsch.
In MünchenwohntMariaseit zwei Jahren.
Am Wochenendearbeitenwirnicht.
Nach dem KurstrinktPauleinen Kaffee.

Examples:

  • Heute lerne ich Deutsch.
  • In München wohnt Maria.
  • Am Wochenende arbeiten wir nicht.
  • Nach dem Kurs trinkt Paul einen Kaffee.

When another element moves to position 1, the subject usually moves behind the conjugated verb. This word order is called inversion.

3. What is a sentence element?

A sentence element can consist of one word or several words.

Examples:

  • Ich lerne Deutsch.
  • Meine Schwester lernt Deutsch.
  • Der neue Student aus Spanien lernt Deutsch.
  • Am Montagmorgen beginnt der Kurs.

Each bold group occupies one position in the sentence.

That is why the conjugated verb is not always the second written word.

4. What is the conjugated verb?

The conjugated verb changes according to the subject.

Example with lernen:

SubjectConjugated verb
ichlerne
dulernst
er / sie / eslernt
wirlernen
ihrlernt
sie / Sielernen

In a declarative main clause, this changed verb form takes position 2.

Examples:

  • Ich lerne Deutsch.
  • Du lernst Deutsch.
  • Er lernt Deutsch.
  • Wir lernen Deutsch.

5. Position 1 is flexible

Different information can occupy position 1.

Subject

  • Paul arbeitet heute im Büro.

Time

  • Heute arbeitet Paul im Büro.

Place

  • Im Büro arbeitet Paul heute.

Object

  • Deutsch lernt Paul jeden Abend.

The emphasis changes, but the verb remains in position 2.

6. Common mistakes

Mistake 1: The verb is in position 3

  • ❌ Heute ich lerne Deutsch.
  • ✅ Heute lerne ich Deutsch.

Mistake 2: English word order after time or place

  • ❌ In München Maria wohnt.
  • ✅ In München wohnt Maria.

Mistake 3: Counting words instead of sentence elements

  • ❌ Der neue Student heute kommt.
  • ✅ Der neue Student kommt heute.

Mistake 4: Keeping the subject before the verb after inversion

  • ❌ Am Montag wir arbeiten zu Hause.
  • ✅ Am Montag arbeiten wir zu Hause.

Summary

  2. The conjugated verb is in position 2.
  3. Position 2 means the second sentence element, not always the second word.
