Syntax

Contrast: obwohl & trotzdem

Express unexpected contrast with subordinate clauses and connectors.

Contrast: obwohl & trotzdem

obwohl and trotzdem express an unexpected contrast.

Compare:

  • Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.
  • Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.

The meaning is similar, but the sentence structure is different.

1. obwohl

obwohl means although or even though.

It introduces a subordinate clause.

Therefore, the conjugated verb goes to the end.

Pattern:

Main clause, obwohl + subject + other information + conjugated verb.

Examples:

  • Wir gehen spazieren, obwohl es regnet.
  • Anna arbeitet, obwohl sie müde ist.
  • Paul kommt, obwohl er keine Zeit hat.

2. obwohl-clause first

The obwohl clause can come first.

Pattern:

Obwohl-clause, conjugated verb + subject + rest of main clause.

Examples:

  • Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.
  • Obwohl Anna müde ist, arbeitet sie weiter.
  • Obwohl Paul keine Zeit hat, kommt er.

The subordinate clause occupies position 1.

Therefore, the main clause begins with the conjugated verb.

Incorrect:

  • ❌ Obwohl es regnet, wir gehen spazieren.
  • ✅ Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.

3. trotzdem

trotzdem means nevertheless, still, or despite that.

It does not introduce a subordinate clause.

It is a connector that occupies position 1 in a main clause.

Pattern:

Trotzdem + conjugated verb + subject + other information.

Examples:

  • Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.
  • Anna ist müde. Trotzdem arbeitet sie weiter.
  • Paul hat keine Zeit. Trotzdem kommt er.

The conjugated verb comes directly after trotzdem.

Incorrect:

  • ❌ Trotzdem wir gehen spazieren.
  • ✅ Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.

4. obwohl and trotzdem compared

obwohlsubordinate clauseverb at the endobwohl es regnet
trotzdemmain clause connectorverb in position 2trotzdem gehen wir

Compare:

  • Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.

Both sentences express the same contrast:

  • rain normally prevents a walk;
  • the walk happens anyway.

5. Clause order

Main clause first with obwohl

  • Wir gehen spazieren, obwohl es regnet.

Subordinate clause first with obwohl

  • Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.

Separate main clause with trotzdem

  • Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.

6. Comma

A comma is required between the main clause and the obwohl clause.

Examples:

  • Anna arbeitet, obwohl sie müde ist.
  • Obwohl Paul keine Zeit hat, kommt er.

With trotzdem, two separate main clauses are often written as two sentences:

  • Anna ist müde. Trotzdem arbeitet sie weiter.

7. Common mistakes

Mistake 1: Main-clause word order after obwohl

  • ❌ obwohl ich bin müde
  • ✅ obwohl ich müde bin

Mistake 2: Subject-first order after trotzdem

  • ❌ Trotzdem ich arbeite weiter.
  • ✅ Trotzdem arbeite ich weiter.

Mistake 3: Wrong order after an initial obwohl-clause

  • ❌ Obwohl ich müde bin, ich arbeite weiter.
  • ✅ Obwohl ich müde bin, arbeite ich weiter.
